Gunn Ambushes Late Model Competition for 2nd Time While Duratz, Niederriter, Robertson & Chytil Score 1st Wins!

PITTSBURGH,PA (6-25-05) -  West Mifflin’s Scott Gunn controlled the Napa Late Model field to earn his second victory of the season Saturday night at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway.  Collecting first wins on Pittsburgh Circle Track Club Night at the Speedway were Tom Duratz (Advance Auto Parts Limited Late Models, Dennis Niederriter (E-Modifieds), Bill Robertson (Isiminger’s Pennzoil Pure Stocks), and Adam Chytil (Amateur Stocks).

The first main event of the evening was the twenty lap Limited Late Model feature which belonged to Tom Duratz from Canonsburg, who went wire to wire in the caution free event to convincingly take the victory.  As Duratz had things pretty much in hand, all eyes were focused on the instense side by side battle between Jim Stephans and Brandon Burgoon.  At the checker it was Stephans winning the war, and Burgoon settled for third.  Monarch Oil Hard Charger, Jesse Burroughs, rode home fourth with rookie Ray Brown fifth.  Bobby Castelveter finished sixth with Tommy Schirnhofer seventh, Nick Duratz eighth, Larry Marks ninth and John Hobbs completed the top ten.  Schirnhofer and Brown took the heats.

Up next was the Napa Late Models headed by Scott Gunn and Ben Miley.  Gunn immediately shot into the lead with Miley tucked into second.  The full field set a torrid pace led by Gunn until a lap eleven caution for debris on the track slowed the action.  On the restart, Lou Bradich displaced Miley for second, and took up the assault on Gunn, but it was clearly Gunn’s night, and he rode on uncontested the rest of the way to take the victory, the third of his late model career.  Bradich and Steve Baker dueled it out for second, and Baker finally got the advantage which he held the final laps to claim the runner-up position.  Bradich settled for third with John Flinner fourth and Miley rounded out the top five.  Danny Rich turned in a steady run to drive home sixth.  The remainder of the top ten were Lynn Geisler, Dave Wade, Mark Banal and D.J. Miller. The three heats were taken by Bradich, Baker and Rich while Jared Miley, who missed the top ten by one spot, earned the Monarch Oil Hard Charger honors.

The E-Modified feature produced still another career first winner in the highly competitive open wheeled division.  Running at the front all season and close on several occasions, Dennis Niederriter finally had his night in the winner’s circle as he stayed in command the entire distance to impressively earn his first victory in the E-Mods.  Niederriter, who has been racing at the track for five years held off Wayne Tessean, Tom Martineck, Shawn Domhoff and Kari Gasser in the caution free event.  Mike Basich rode home sixth in front of Daryl Charlier, Russ Dempsey, Joel Johns and Cody Barrack.  Mike Basich and Kari Gasser notched heat wins, and J.E. Stalder was the Monarch Oil Hard Charger.

Just like the E-Mods, the Pure Stock feature went caution free as well with Bill Robertson in control from the drop of the green.  Robertson was pressured throughout the event by Darryl Robison who had his hands full with Craig Kamicker, A.J. Poljak and Ron O’Patchen.  The top five crossed the stripe in that order earning former Amateur Stock Champ Robertson his career first checkered flag in the Pure Stock Division.  Finishing sixth was Monarch Oil Hard Charger Bob Schwartzmiller, who just nipped Steve Webb at the stripe. Nick Kocuba was eighth, Bob Betz took ninth and Joe Anthony completed the top ten.  O’Patchen and Kamicker claimed the heats.

The Amateur Stocks took to the track for their twelve lap feature, and it got off to a rousing start when Butch Levandosky, from the front row, spun in front of the field.  Amazingly everyone avoided the spinning Levandosky, but it set the precedent for the rest of the race as the yellow fever took over. The caution filled event saw Adam Chytil  take  the lead away from Eric Goldberg on lap four, and Chytil hung on to the front spot until the checkered finally flew to claim his first trophy of the year in the Amateur Stocks.  The final lap ended with a hood flying through the air at the finish line, but Robby Torrens earned runnerup honors with Wes Wheeler credited with third, Goldberg fourth and Craig Koteles wound up fifth.  Rick Gorsuch finished sixth with Davy Lee seventh, John Chipps eighth, Todd Evans ninth and John Greywolds completed the top ten.  Chytil and Torrens won the heats and Craig Koteles took hard charger honors.

The nightcap demolition derby saw Eric Vickers take the win over Tim Patterson and Rod Patterson.

Saturday, July 2, will find the E-Mods in the spotlight as they run their annual special.  Also in action with a regular racing program will be the Late Models, Limited Late Models, Pure Stocks and Amateur Stocks.  It is also Driver Autograph Night, a one time a year opportunity for all the fans in attendance to go trackside to meet the drivers and see all the cars close up.  For additional information about the racing program at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, visit the web site at www.ppms.com, or you can call the Pittsburgh Business Office at 412-279-7223.
