CHUCK KENNEDY SCORES 100TH CAREER WIN WITH E-MOD VICTORY AT PPMS; HOT SHOE BAKER MELTS COMPETITON FOR 2ND LATE MODEL VICTORY

PITTSBURGH, PA (July 23) –  Adding to their win collection Saturday at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway were Steve Baker, Fairmont WV  (Napa Late Models), Brandon Burgoon, McDonald (Advance Auto Parts Limited Late Models), Craig Kamicker, Hopewell (Isiminger’s Pennzoil Pure Stocks)  and Robby Torrens, Kennedy Twp. (Amateur Stocks).  Reaching a 100th career milestone was Chuck Kennedy of Mars who scored the big victory in the E-Modifieds to give him a total of 100 wins in his 27 years of racing.

Dave Wade grabbed the lead from the front row and set a quick pace with Lou Bradich from fourth tucking in behind.  Sixth starting Baker was settled into third by the 3rd circuit.  The trio sailed around the half mile until the caution waved twice to slow the action on the tenth lap.   Wade kept the point until lap 12 when Baker suddenly swept into the lead.  Wade hung on to second with Bradich now third.  Baker found a great line and started to pull away as Bradich battled with Wade for second.  After the third and final caution of the race on lap 19 slowed the pace, Bradich finally displaced Wade for second on the restart, and then John Flinner got by Wade as well to take third.  When the checker was in sight, Baker’s lead had increased to more than half a straightaway.  The impressive drive by Baker gives him 23 PPMS Late Model victories tying him with Ty Long and Lou Bradich for sixth on the all time win list.  Bradich crossed the stripe unchallenged for second, with Flinner third and Wade settled for fourth.  Ed Ferree came on strong towards the end to claim the fifth position.  Six through ten were D.J. Miller, Jared Miley, Scott Gunn, Scott Peltz and Jim Lepro.  After crossing the stripe, contact between Mark Moats and Keith Rodriguez sent Rodriguez into the front stretch wall and flipping over, but he was uninjured in the scary crash.  Flinner and Ferree took the heat race wins and Michael Davis was the Monarch Oil Hard Charger.

Frankie Schneider battled with Bobby Castelveter throughout the early and mid portion of the 20-lap Limited Late Model feature, leaving everyone thinking one or the other was going to pull off the victory.  Castelveter would pull along side on several occasions, but each time Schneider ended up in front at the scoring line.  However while that exciting racing was taking place, Brandon Burgoon was waging his own battle with another division rookie, Ray Brown, for third, and after finally getting past Brown on the 17th lap, it was clear that Burgoon had his sights set on victory lane as well.  Burgoon went to the outside and battled next with Castelveter, claiming the runnerup spot with one lap to go.  As Schneider and Burgoon raced nearly dead even on the final circuit, Burgoon took the inside lane, and Burgoon  made the winning pass coming out of turn four heading for Denny Carson’s waving checkered flag.  Schneider, who was credited with leading 19 laps, settled for second, while Castelveter held on for third in a close finish over Ray Brown and Jim Stephans.   Tommy Schirnhofer claimed sixth with Jesse Burroughs seventh, Kirk Young eighth, Nick Duratz ninth, and John Hobbs rounded out the top ten.  Burgoon earned a heat race win as well as Hard Charger honors and Jesse Burroughs was the other heat race winner.

More excitement was in store for the fans as the E-Mods took to the track for their 15-lap feature event.  Tom Martineck grabbed the early lead, and he appeared to be the car to beat until Mike Basich finally managed to close the gap.  On the ninth lap contact between Martineck and Basich allowed third running Chuck Kennedy  to get by both, but Basich was not able to recover and he in turn got caught up with Shawn Domhoff to bring out the yellow.  Martineck was sent to the rear and Kennedy inherited the lead for the restart.  Once back under green, Kennedy found his line on the track and opened up a sizeable lead which he kept to the checker for his first  win of 2005 at PPMS, and 100th of his racing career.  Kevin Miller had a career best second with Daryl Charlier third, Dennis Niederriter fourth and Joel Johns took fifth.  Six through ten were Chris Basich, Kurt Halbedl, Mitch Basich, Kari Gasser and Russ Matejka.  Kennedy and Charlier won the heats and Kalbedl was the Monarch Oil Hard Charger.

More side by side racing continued in the Pure Stock main as Darryl Robison and Craig Kamicker put on a breathtaking show for the fans.  Robison led the first two laps with Kamicker in front for the next two before Robison took the point for four more laps.  On the ninth circuit Kamicker finally got the lead for good, and he put it in overdrive to go on and win his third of the season.  Robison held off Bob Schwartzmiller for second with Nick Kocuba fourth, and Tim Folmer completed the top five.  The next round of five was made up of Jeff Broniszewski, Bill Robertson, Steve Webb, Ron O’Patchen and Jake Simmons.  Simmons was the hard charger of the event and winners of the three heat races were O’Patchen, Robertson and Kamicker.

John Greywolds kept the Amateur Stock field behind him until the fourth circuit when a scramble on the back shoot ended his good run when contact sent him flipping several times.   He was okay, but done for the event and once the race restarted, it was the Tomei and Torrens show.   Teammates Ian Tomei and Robby Torrens waged a spirited battle for the top prize, but when the checker waved, it was Torrens taking the win, his fifth on the season.  Tomei held second with Wes Wheeler third, Craig Koteles fourth and Gary Koteles who was subbing for Skeets Levandosky fifth.  Eric Goldberg finished sixth with Adam Chytil seventh, Josh Langer (subbing for Davy Lee) eighth, Todd Evans ninth and Bill Tennant taking tenth.  G. Koteles and Goldberg won the heats, and Craig Koteles claimed the hard charger honors.

Tuesday, July 26 is “Topless Tuesday” on the Monster Half Mile for the Late Models and Limited Late Models.  35 laps is the distance for the roofless late models with the winner taking home $2000 for his efforts.  In addition the E-Mods, Pure Stocks and Amateur Stocks will be presenting a complete racing program.  Gates open at 5pm with racing at 7pm.

Saturday, July 30 will be Colussy Chevrolet Night at the track for our five racing divisions, and a demolition derby will take place following the racing action to complete the night.  For more information regarding the racing program at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway, visit our web site at www.ppms.com or call the Pittsburgh Business Office at 412-279-7223.
