Davey J Bags $5K in MACS’ “Garin Memorial 50” at PPMS By Jeff Geesey PITTSBURGH, PA (August 13) - Davey Johnson, Johnson and Booper Bare paced the 24-car starting field to green. Bare snagged the early lead followed by Johnson, George Kowatic, Mike Johnson and current MACS points leader Mike Balzano. The super smooth and wide surface provided the source for a blistering pace as the first 10 laps clicked off in less than three minutes. The first of five slow downs came in the form of a red flag for young gun, Jared Miley who crashed head on into the turn three wall. Miley, though shaken, climbed from the car under his own power. As the field regrouped for the double-file restart, Bare, the leader, again choose the outside, which ultimately proved to be a fatal mistake that thwarted his effort for the victory. Johnson moved to the pole, followed by Kowatic, M. Johnson and Balzano. As the field fired at the cone, Johnson lurched into the lead as Bare scrambled to regain the top spot. Three more slow downs occurred on laps 13, 16, and 21 for minor incidents including debris, for current PPMS points leader, Steve Baker, as well as defending MACS Champion Robbie Blair respectively. Johnson led the field back to the cone for the restart on lap 21 followed by Bare, M. Johnson, Balzano and Kowatic. Johnson, who has now logged 41 victories at the oval since it was opened in 1980, was flawless in his effort. Bare and the trio that followed just didn’t have the set-up to dethrone the fleet Johnson. The final caution flew on lap 37, for a hard crash in turn three which collected former two-time Series Champion and newly inducted Hall of Fame recipient Lynn Geisler; 2003 WRISCO Aluminum MACS Rookie titlist Keith Barbara, and Mark Banal. Banal and Barbara were forced to the pits as a result. “Hot Rod” Rod Conley snapped the drive shaft for the third such loss of the year and pitted as well. Johnson for the final time brought the field to the cone followed by Bare, M. Johnson Balzano, and Kowatic. During the final 13 laps, none of Johnson's contenders had anything for the leader as he comfortably led the event to the checkers over Bare, M. Johnson, Balzano, and Kowatic. MACS nightly JRC winner was Charles Long, age 12, Companion Events Taken by Castelveter,
Daryl Charlier, Simmons and Lee The Advance Auto Parts Limited Late Model 20-lap feature proved to be a romp for Bobby Castelveter who had the field covered from start to finish. By halfway, Castelveter had built up a huge lead, but debris on the track from John Cain's car brought out the yellow flag on lap 13 to erase his big advantage. Once the green was back out, Castelveter put it back on auto pilot, and went unchallenged to the checker for his tenth PPMS career victory and second of the season. Jesse Burroughs took runner up honors with Tom Duratz right behind for third. Monarch Oil Hard Charger Jim Stephans came from the rear of the field to claim fourth and Ray Brown completed the top five. Pete Rech was sixth, Nick Duratz seventh, D.J. Miller subbing for John Hobbs was eighth, Laura Lukon took ninth and Bruce Takich rounded out the top ten. Heats went to Brown and Stephans. Two early cautions in the E-Modified main couldn't slow down Daryl Charlier, who like Castelveter in the Limited Lates, was hooked up and sailing. Charlier's advantage by mid point was insurmountable, and the race stayed green to the checker, allowing the flawless Charlier to easily win his second E-Mod feature of the year. The race for second was a good one with Joel Johns coming out runner up over Tom Martineck, Chuck Kennedy and Dennis Niederriter. Six through ten were Kari Gasser, Mitch Basich, Mike Basich, Cody Barack and Dale Charlier. Kurt Halbedl and Kari Gasser won the heat races, and Dale Charlier took the hard charger honors. Taking full advantage of his front row start, Jake Simmons finally overcame a season filled with tough breaks and hard luck to go wire to wire for his first Isiminger's Pennzoil Pure Stock feature win of 2005. Simmons had his hands full with Darryl Robison and Joe Anthony throughout the event, but it was his night to shine in victory lane. Robison narrowly defeated Anthony for the second spot while Jeff Broniszewski rode home fourth and Tim Folmer claimed fifth. The next round of five were Aaron Jones, E.J. Vasko, Ron O'Patchen, Craig Kamicker and Nick Kocuba. A.J. Poljak and Vasko were the heat race winners, and Aaron Jones was the Monarch Oil Hard Charger. Undoubtedly the best race of the night was the Amateur Stock 12-lap barn burner of a feature Davy Lee, and super sub Gary Koteles, in the Dennis Maffei stock, ran door handle to door handle before Lee finally got the spot, but last week's winner Eric Goldberg was on the charge from the back and by lap nine he had edged in front of Lee with Koteles still there and Ian Tomei right in the thick of things as well. On the next circuit Lee went back in front taking Koteles with him, but Lee pulled away enough to go uncontested the final lap for his second winner's trophy of the season. Goldberg got back around Koteles to claim second at the stripe leaving Koteles a close third with Tomei fourth, and Wes Wheeler completed the top five. Goldberg won the heat race and was also the hard charger of the event. A regular five division Action Event of Late Models, Limited Late Models, E-Mods, Pure Stocks and Amateur Stocks will be presented Saturday, August 20 with the spotlight focused on the Late Models for the running of the "Pappy Kessler Memorial" race in honor of Bill "Pappy" Kessler. August 27 will find the Limited Late Models featured as they present the annual "Jook George Memorial". All other divisions will be in action as well. Gates open at 5pm with racing underway promptly at 7pm.
