Baker, Stadelman, Tessean,
Simmons, Lee, and Curry repeat at Pittsburgh’s PA Motor Speedway.
PITTSBURGH, PA (August 4,
2007) - Fairmont WV’s Steve Baker grabbed his third feature of the
season in the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Late Model’s at PPMS. It was
“Past Late Model Champion’s” night, and Baker had been a champion in
1996. Mike Davis and Dave Wade brought the field down for the green.
On the first lap, Baker who started 4th, split Davis and
Wade in a daring move coming off turn two to take the lead. As soon
as the first lap was complete the first of four yellows occurred, as
Pete Rech slowed after getting a flat. On the restart Baker
reassumed the lead with Brandon Burgoon moving into second. On lap 2
George Kowatic, who was running fifth, hit the turn three wall hard
after contact with another car. Baker retook the lead on the start,
with Dave Wade back in second. Baker started to pull away from the
field. Meanwhile last week’s winner Jared Miley put on a charge from
his 12th starting spot that would have him 2nd
by lap 10. On lap 12 the third yellow appeared as Mike Davis hit the
turn three and four wall. Davis pitted by was able to return. This
put Miley right on Baker’s tail on the restart but Baker was able to
pull away. On lap 15 the yellow appeared for the 4th time
for Lou Bradich who had slowed with a flat. This gave Miley another
shot, but it was Baker’s night as he pulled away again on the
restart and ended up winning by a ¼ lap for his 29th
career win. Point leader Miley was second followed by Lynn Geisler
who moved up from seventh, Brandon Burgoon, Dave Wade, Tony
Musolino, Keith Rodriguez, Jim Lepro, Mike Davis, and Lou Bradich.
Mike Davis and Jared Miley grabbed the heat wins. Baker took a
“Polish victory lap” after the win, said, “After all the years I
raced here, I’ve never had a victory lap”.
Pittsburgh PA’s Leo Stadelman
grabbed his third Brougher’s Machine Shop Crate Late Model feature
of the season. Mark Moats Jr. grabbed the lead at the outset from
his front row starting spot. Jim Kutas grabbed the top stop on lap
three and began to build a lead. On lap 7 though, Kutas slowed going
down the back straight and brought out the caution. Kutas did return
to action. This put Moats Jr. back into the lead for the restart. At
this point third running Stadelman grabbed the lead using the
outside groove. From this point it was all Stadelman as he pulled
away for the win. Russ Kolesar moved into second on lap 9 and chased
Stadelman, but couldn’t muster a challenge. Last week’s winner and
current point leader Kyle Lukon charged from 12th to
finish third and was all over Kolesar on the last lap. Moats Jr. had
a strong run to finish fourth with top rookie Steve Beatty ending up
fifth. Daryl Charlier ended up sixth with Mike Pegher returning for
sixth followed by Rocky Kugel, Laura Lukon (who came up from the
tail), and Jason Rider. Scott Schempp grabbed his first ever win by
taking the first heat race. Kyle Lukon won the second heat.
In the Sunoco Race Fuels Pure
Stocks, it was the Annual Pure Stock Special, with McKees Rocks PA’s
Jake Simmons picking up his fifth win of the year. Simmons grabbed
the lead at the start and never looked back as he led the entire
distance. Stacie White ran second for the first three laps, when Joe
Anthony moved in that spot. Anthony ran second until lap 12, when
Bill Robertson moved into that spot. On the last lap Anthony and
Robertson tangled and knocked them both out of the running. This
moved White back into the second at the finish, with Bob
Schwartzmiller ending up third followed by Nick Kocuba, A.J. Poljak,
Aaron Jones, Don Bauerle, Mike Mohn, Robertson and Anthony. Stacie
White and Jake Simmons won the heats while White also took the dash.
Austintown OH’s Wayne Tessean
grabbed his third Miley Truck Rental E-Mod feature of the season.
Chuck Kennedy grabbed the lead at the start but slowed on lap 3 and
brought out the caution, a victim of a flat. He would return to
action. Kevin Miller grabbed the lead on the restart. Miller lead
the next ten laps and was looking strong, before Tessean made his
move on lap 14. Tessean led the next two laps and picked up the win.
Miller ended up second while Mike Basich rolled in for third. They
were followed by Tom Martineck, J.J. Bametzrieder, Vince Laboon,
Kari Gasser, J.E. Stalder, Stush Sadowski, and Clayton Kennedy. The
Basich brothers, Mike and Chris picked up heat wins.
In the Old Allegheny Shoppe
Amateur Stocks, Davy Lee Independence, PA grabbed win #8 of the
season in the class. Lee grabbed the lead on lap 2 from Jarrod
Weiland and never looked back. Weiland had a strong run to finish
second followed by Tony White, Terry Kerr and last week’s winner
Curt Bish. Finishing sixth was Ray Prolenski, Bill Tenant, Derek
Stefanick, Brian Huchko, and Eric Goldberg. Tony White grabbed the
heat win.
In the Imperial Heights Garage
Young Guns feature, Dusty Curry Dormont, PA grabbed his 10th win of
the season. Curry grabbed the lead at the start, and held off last
week’s winner Mike Reft to pick up the win. Rich Mason finished
third followed by Tyler Fox, Todd Janus, Sean Graham, Devin Tomei,
and Alec Broniszewski.
