IMPERIAL, PA .B.A. Malcuit of Strasburg, OH bested a stellar field of cars to win Saturday's season opening Late Model feature at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Limited Late Model rookie Rick Heim of North Hills went straight to the front of the class to take his first checkered flag, since moving up from the Spectator Stocks.. Defending track champion Wayne Tessean of Austintown, OH returned to the winner's circle in the M. Stahl E-Mods and Carnegie's Al Atallah drove to victory in the Schneider Truck Spectator Stocks.
Malcuit used his front row starting spot to dominate the first half of the Late Model feature. A mid-race caution on lap 13 put Doug Dodd, Chub Frank, Mark Banal and Tim Hitt right behind the race leader for the restart. When the race resumed, Hitt charged to second and set his sights on Malcuit while Frank, Dodd, Banal, Lou Bradich and Late Model rookie Mike Cecere battled behind them. Malcuit made some solid moves in traffic down the stretch to edge the eleventh starting Hitt by a car length at the checkered flag. Frank, who started ninth, was third, Dodd fourth and twelfth starting Bradich fifth. Six through ten were: Cecere, Banal, Steve Baker, Bill Knepper and Jim Zarin. Heat races for the 33 cars were won by Bradich, Hitt, Brian Durig and Frank. Ed Ferree was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger.
Limited Late Model rookies Len Dobrosielski and Rick Heim wasted little time in adapting to the new division. Dobrosielski led the first half of the 20 lap feature before Heim blew by. Once in front, Heim pulled away to take the win. Dave Wade was second, Dobrosielski third, Jim Stephans fourth and John Pavlick fifth. Joe Johnson, Willie White, Tom Schernhofer, and Tom Bateman rounded out the field. Heim was also the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger and won the heat race.
Jim Dandy Jr., Wayne Tessean and Larry Kugel, the three E-Mod drivers with the most wins at PPMS, started at the front of the 15 lap M. Stahl E-Mod feature. Kugel set the pace for three laps before he was overtaken by Tessean. Dandy dropped Kugel to third on fifth lap but could not reel in the victorious Tessean. Kugel held of the challenges of Bootie Petsko for third and Scott Gunn was fifth. Rounding out the top ten were: Jeff Haefke, Russ Matejka, Chad McClellan, Jimmy Plance and Jim Petrelle. McClellan was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger. Gunn, Petsko and Tessean won the preliminaries.
Al Atallah took the lead early in the Schneider Truck Spectator Stocks and then withstood the late race challenges of Frank Schneider Jr. to claim the 15 lap feature. Fred Schneider was third, Rich Apolito fourth and Charlie DiLoreto fifth. Neal Isminger, Frank Schneider Sr., Lou Lamonde, Stacie White and Daryl Robison completed the top ten. Atallah was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger, and won a heat race along with Schneider Jr.
