IMPERIAL, PA... Ed Ferree of Saxonsburg was in the right place at the right time to collect his first Late Model feature win of the season Saturday at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor speedway. Pittsburgh Pete Loria, who dropped out while leading last week, was not to be denied in registering his first Zoresco Limited Late Model victory. Logan Dernoshek of Cecil became the first repeat winner this season by besting the M. Stahl Modifieds, and defending track champion Ralph Hysong Jr. thrilled the fans by claiming the exciting Spectator Stock feature.
For the second week in a row, heartbreak struck Steve Baker in the 25 lap Late Model feature. After rear end problems sidelined Baker while leading in the closing laps a week ago, the "West Virginia Rim Rider" appeared to be on his way to victory again, but it wasn't to be after a late race caution. With four laps remaining, Baker led Doug Dodd and Ed Ferree into turn one on the restart. Ferree pulled inside of Dodd, who made slight contact with Baker, sending both cars spinning and collecting the sixth place car of Lou Bradich. Ferree inherited the lead on the restart and drove on to his 15th career win. Opening night winner Mark Banal withstood the late charge of Davey Johnson for second. John Johnson was fourth and Doug Crawford fifth. Last week's winner Lynn Geisler, Ben Miley, Baker, Rick Wachter and Jim Zarin completed the top ten. Bradich, Banal and Dodd won the heat races. D. Johnson was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger for the second straight week.
Just like Baker, Pete Loria dropped from last week's Zoresco Limited Late Model feature with mechanical problems while leading. This week Loria had better fate than Baker and notched the 20-lap feature win. Duane Popham led the first 16 circuits before Loria made his winning pass. Popham, Kirk Young, Willie White and Mark Moats completed the top five. Six through ten were: Dave Wade, Jim Stephans, Mike Cecere, George Bland and Charlie Jazinski. Bland was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger. Alex Ferree and Moats won the heat races.
Logan Dernoshek outfoxed the front running cars of Bootie Petsko and Dave Groves following a lap seven caution to take the lead and ensuing victory in the M. Stahl Modifieds. Groves was second1 Kurt Halbedl-subbing for Gary Scott in car #22-third, Jeff Sharp fourth and Wayne Tessean charged back to take fifth after a mid-race incident while trying to take the lead from Petsko. Petsko, Stush Sadawski, Mike Hess, DJ Miller and Larry Walters rounded out the top ten. Larry Kugel and Dernoshek won the preliminaries. Hess was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger.
The front five cars put on an unbelievable show in the 15-lap Spectator Stock feature. When the checkered flag waved, Ralph Hysong Jr. was the winner, ahead of Bob Damron, Joe Vacca, Al Atallah and Rick Heim. Len Dobrosielski, Andy Koteles, Neal Isminger, Doug Foster and Stacie White completed the top ten Frankie Schneider and Dobrosielski won the heat races while Andy Koteles was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger. This Saturday, April 25th, regular racing continues at PPMS in the Late Models, Zoresco Limited Late Models, M. Stahl Modifieds and Spectator Stocks.
