IMPERIAL, PA.... Father's Day emotions ran high Saturday night at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. Ed Ferree of Saxonburg drove to his third win this season in the Late Models, dedicating the victory to his father Roy who passed away earlier this month.
Seventeen year old rookie Travis Geisler of Cranberry Township put a large smile on his father Lynn's face by winning his first career feature in the Zoresco Limited Late Models. Lynn Geisler heads the all-time win list at PPMS with 62 checkered flags, but none of those may be as memorable.
Larry Kugel of East Liverpool, OH made his sons proud by claiming his sixth M. Stahl Modified feature this year, and while Rick Heim was at a wedding, his cousin Bob Heim of Pittsburgh came out of semi-retirement to best the Spectator Stocks.
Former Limited Late Model champion Ricky Thomas set the pace in the 25-lap Late Model feature, and showed signs of getting his first win. Thomas held the competition at bay until lap 18 when Ed Ferree, who started fifth, made his winning pass. Mark Banal, who had won the previous two weeks, charged from twelfth to third. Lynn Geisler was fourth and Steve Baker fifth. Doug Dodd, Bill Knepper, Ben Miley, Doug Crawford and Jim Kutas rounded out the top ten. Ferree, Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger Banal, and Bill Adler won the heat races.
The "next generation" shined bright in the Zoresco Limited Late Models. Second generation drivers Alex Ferree, Travis Geisler and Chris Angelicchio raced for the lead early on in the 20-lap feature. Ferree held the top spot with Geisler taking second from Angelicchio on the sixth circuit. Geisler went to front on the next round, but Ferree was back ahead on lap 9. Finally, Travis took the lead for good on lap 10 and kept the h~rd charging Ferree at bay to the finish. Points leader Pete Loria finished third, Angelicchio was fourth, and Mark Moats fifth. Dave Wade, Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger Mike Cecere, Kirk Young, Charlie Jazinski and Don Dibert completed the top ten. Duane Popham and Young won the preliminaries.
Starting eleventh, Larry Kugel put on another driving clinic on his way to the M. Stahl Modified 15-lap feature. Kugel methodically worked his way to the front, passing Scott Gunn for the lead on lap nine. Points leader Wayne Tessean passed Gunn for second on the final lap. Joe Hopkinson and Bootie Petsko were fourth and fifth respectively. Six through ten were: Danny Burns, Jeff Haefke, Darrin Miller, Bobby Bongiorni and Stush Sadowski. Logan Dernoshek and Tessean won the heat races. Kugel was the Monarch Oil/Wolf's Head Hard Charger.
Bob Heim led wire to wire in the Spectator Stock 15-lap feature, but the racing behind him was action packed. Thirteen cars ran with the lead pack and when the checkered flag waved, Ralph Hysong Jr. was second, Frankie Schneider third, high school graduate Charlie DiLoreto fourth, and Doug Foster fifth. Al Atallah, Stacie White, Neal
Isminger, Brian LeJeune and Rich Apolito completed the top ten. Schneider and Len Dobrosielski were the heat race winners.
This Saturday, June ~ regular racing continues for the Late Models, Zoresco Limited Late Models, M. Stahl Modifieds and Spectator Stocks. Plus, the Advantra Senior Series makes its first appearance of the season, and it will be Frisbee toss night in the grandstands. Gates open at 5pm with racing at 7pm.
