DAVEY J. GRAB'S "PENN NATIONAL 100"!!!
IMPERIAL, PA ..Davey Johnson of Greensburg,PA scored a convincing victory Saturday at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway lapping up to the eighth place car in route to the $10,000 payday in the STARS National DirtCar Racing League sanctioned "6th Annual Penn National 100". Starting third aboard the Richard Construction/Bland's Towing/Rocket Chassis/Draime Racing Engines No. 0 Bland Motorsports Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Johnson grabbed the lead away from Tim Hitt on lap 39 and raced away to a five second margin of victory over Doug Dodd. Bart Hartman finished third with Hitt fourth and Chub Frank fifth. Completing the top ten were 12th starting Steve Shaver, 17th starting Donnie Moran, 14th starting Gary Stuhler, Doug Crawford and R.J. Conley.
For the first time in STARS history the event matched car's utilizing the STARS "Open Engine", P.P.M.S. "Spec. Engine" and "Open-Restrictor Plate Engine". All car's were racing on a mandated Hoosier D-55 Economy tire on all four wheels with the P.P.M.S. "Spec. Engine" and "Open-Restrictor Plate Engine" allowed a 12" spoiler instead of an 8" spoiler for the STARS "Open Engine" car's. Of the 54 entry's, 38 driver's chose the STARS "Open Engine" with 14 driver's using the P.P.M.S "Spec. Engine" and only two driver's opting for the "Open-Restrictor Plate Engine". Ironically, Johnson used a P.P.M.S "Spec. Engine" for his win while Dodd used a STARS "Open Engine" to finish second and Hartman went with the "Open-Restrictor Plate Engine" to place third.
Hitt powered into the lead from his pole position after one lap with Johnson, John Flinner, Ed Ferree and Dodd trailing. Dodd powered past Ferree for fourth on lap 3 as Hitt pulled out to a three second margin by the end of lap 10. Entering lapped traffic on lap 11 Hitt saw his advantage slowly whittle down as Johnson closed the gap to two seconds. Dodd and Flinner got together in turn one on lap 12 shuffling Flinner back to seventh with Crawford now fifth. With 20 laps in the book's, Hitt's lead was now down to one second as Johnson used the lapped traffic to his advantage. Johnson made a stab at Hitt off turn two but Rob Blair slammed the turn two wall bringing out the race's first caution. Three more laps were completed before Lou Bradich slowed to a stop with engine woe's. With the race back underway, Johnson kept right with Hitt and by lap 35 had pulled alongside of the leader keeping the pressure on and taking the lead on lap 39. Dodd quickly gained ground on Hitt grabbing second on lap 45.
One lap after the mandatory halfway fuel stop, Hartman made a strong move bolting from sixth to fourth as Johnson opened up a one second lead. Hitt continued to slide backward's as Hartman took third on lap 66. By lap 80 Johnson enjoyed a three second cushion over Dodd and with ten to go had opened up his lead to four seconds. Dodd and Hartman went after each other over the final laps allowing Johnson to stretch his lead to five seconds at the finish.
The $38,000 purse event attracted 54 driver's to the high-banked 1/2 mile track with Ferree topping the field in time trials at 20.835 seconds. BORLA EXHAUST heat race winner's were Hitt, Hartman, R.J. Conley (SCOTT PERFORMANCE WIRE heat race bonus winner) and Frank. Hitt earned the feature pole with his triumph in the ISKY RACING CAMS dash while Moran and Rick Dawson scored the PRO SHOCKS "B" Mains.
