Laura Lukon makes history at PPMS, Wins Career First Feature. Jared Miley, Daryl Charlier, Anthony, Poljak, Lee (2), and Reft also win on September 1, 2007
PITTSBURGH, PA (September 1, 2007) - Burgettstown PA’s Laura Lukon made a bit of history in the Brougher’s Speed Shop Crate Lates and became the first female driver to win in the class. Laura Lukon and Josh Holtgraver brought the field down for the start. Laura took the lead on lap one, but was replaced on lap two by Leo Stadelman, Stadelman led lap three when a shock broke going into turn three taking him out of the event and bringing out the races only caution. On the restart Laura grabbed the lead and fought off a challenge from Jim Kutas for a lap. Laura began to pull away a bit at that point as the battle raged behind between Kutas, Jason Rider and Russ Kolesar. Rider moved into second and chased Laura for the rest of the distance but could never mount a serious challenge. At the finish it was Laura Lukon, Rider, Kolesar, Kutas, point leader and Laura’s brother Kyle Lukon, Josh Holtgraver, Rocky Kugel, Mark Moats Jr., Scott Schempp and Bryant Hank. The heats fell to Jim Kutas and Kyle Lukon. Laura was the second female to win at PPMS as Kari Gasser won an E-Mod feature a few seasons ago.
In the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Late Models South Park PA’s Jared Miley grabbed his fourth win of the season. Jim Zarin led the first lap, before being replaced on lap two by Lynn Geisler. Pete Rech brought out the races only yellow when he slowed with rear suspension problems. Geisler grabbed the lead on the restart with Jared Miley moving into second. Geisler and Miley set a torrid pace while they battled for the lead, side by side at times. Miley grabbed the lead on lap12 off the inside of turns one and two, and never looked back, winning by a straight away at the end. Geisler was second, followed by Dave Wade who was a distant third. Tom Beck had his best run of the season to finish fourth, with Zarin in fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were, Ben Miley, Scott Gunn, Jim Kutas, Dave Johnson and Chuck Moury. Lynn Geisler and Jared Miley took the heat races. Brandon Burgoon was leading a heat when mechanical problems set in and he was forced to drop out, and was unable to start the feature. Jared Miley has increased his point lead, as second place in points Steve Baker was absent due to a family commitment.
The Sunoco Race Fuels Pure Stocks had two features, making one up from the rainout last week. A.J. Poljak Baldwin, PA grabbed his first of the season in the first feature, while Joe Anthony also of Baldwin, PA grabbed his fifth in the second go. Bob Schwartzmiller grabbed the lead on the start of the first main and led the first four laps. On lap five current point leader Stacie White took the lead. White was looking strong, but the race changed on lap 13, when a caution appeared. On the restart White retook the lead while Joe Anthony made a move on the outside, and Jake Simmons and A.J. Poljak moved to the inside. White ended up in the wall going into turn three, done for the evening, while the officials put Anthony to the rear. On the restart this put Jake Simmons up front and Poljak moved into second. Simmons led lap 14, but coming around for the checker Poljak got under Simmons on the last lap and the pair made contact, which sent Simmons spinning. At the finish it was Poljak, Schwartzmiller, Anthony, Bill Robertson, Robert Betz, Simmons, Nick Kocuba, and Stacie White. In the second main Bob Schwartzmiller grabbed the lead at the start and led until lap 11 when Anthony took over. Anthony was never able to shake Schwartzmiller, but held on for the win, his fifth of the season. Bill Robertson ran third followed by Nick Kocuba, Russ Volponi, Robert Betz and Don Bauerle. Joe Anthony won the lone heat.
The Miley Truck Rental E-Mod feature saw Midway, PA’s Daryl Charlier win his fourth feature of the season in exciting fashion. Bruce Dreistadt brought the field down for the green. A tangle on the first lap saw 8 of the fields starters involved. Vince Laboon, Willy Briggs and Dreistadt were unable to continue. On the restart Tom Martineck grabbed the top spot, but was replaced by Wayne Tessean on lap two. Tessean was looking strong, and appeared to be headed to his fourth win of the season and 70th career overall. Charlier had other ideas, as he used his patented high groove, and charged to third by lap ten, second on lap 13 and caught and passed Tessean on lap 14. Kevin Miller who was also on the charge in the late stages of the event also got by Tessean at the line, followed by Chuck Kennedy, Martineck, Chris Basich, J.J. Bametzrieder, Jim Plance, Stush Sadowski, and Kari Gasser. Kevin Miller and Daryl Charlier took the heat wins.
In the Old Allegany Shoppe Amateur Stocks, it was double features also, and current point leader Independence PA’s Davy Lee grabbed both along with the heat. Lee took the lead in the first main when leader Eric Goldberg spun in turn two on lap 4. Lee pulled away on the restart to pick up win #10. Bill Tennant was second followed by Curt Bish, Goldberg, Terry Kerr, Jarrod Weiland, Brian Huchko, and Rob Ward. In the second go, Lee took the lead off Terry Kerr on lap three and won feature #11. Curt Bish finished second with Tony White in third followed by Kerr, Bill Tennant, Rob Ward, Brian Huchko, Ray Polanski, (who flipped in his heat, but was able to repair his car for the feature) and Eric Goldberg.
Mike Reft, Whitehall, PA grabbed his third win of the season in the Imperial Heights Garage Young Guns. Rich Mason grabbed the lead at the start and battled with Reft and Shawn Graham until Graham spun trying to pass Mason going into turn one. On the restart, Reft went by Mason and went on to the win. Mason was second followed by Dusty Curry, Graham, Todd Janus, Tyler Atkinson, Alec Broniszewski, Tyler Fox and newcomer Brian Beyerbach.
