Start Racing with Zero Experience

Kids & Teens | Ages 13–19 | Young Guns Division

Getting into racing does not require years of experience, expensive equipment, or a racing background. Teenagers ages 13 to 19 can begin their racing journey at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in the Young Guns Division. This division provides a structured and safety focused entry point for first time drivers and families.

Whether your child dreams of racing or is simply looking for a competitive outlet that builds confidence, responsibility, and discipline, Young Guns offers a proven starting point.

What Is the Young Guns Division?

The Young Guns Division is PPMS’s entry level dirt racing class for teenagers ages 13 to 19. It is designed to introduce new drivers to the fundamentals of dirt track racing in a structured, safety focused, and family friendly environment.

Many Young Guns drivers start with no prior racing or mechanical experience. The division focuses on skill development, consistency, and respect both on and off the racetrack. Drivers learn racecraft, vehicle setup basics, and how to compete responsibly in an organized racing program.

Who the Young Guns Division is For

For Kids and Teens:
- Entry level dirt track racing starting at age 13
- Hands on experience learning how race cars work
- Confidence built through competition and responsibility
- Teamwork, discipline, and belonging to a racing community

For Parents and Guardians
- A structured and rule driven youth racing program
- Clear safety standards and consistent enforcement
- A supportive family environment for first time racers
- A healthy competitive outlet that teaches accountability and focus

The Young Guns Division emphasizes growth, learning, and long term development. It serves as a starting point for young drivers who may eventually advance into higher level divisions at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.

How to Get Started

Getting started in the Young Guns Division is a guided process. Families do not need to have everything figured out on day one. The first step is simply starting the conversation.

Start by Contacting the Speedway

Families interested in the Young Guns Division are encouraged to begin by reaching out directly to the speedway. Our staff can answer questions, explain the process, and help determine if Young Guns is the right fit.

Eligibility Requirements

The Young Guns Division is open to teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19. Parent or guardian approval is required for all competitors. This division is designed for first time racers and young drivers entering dirt track racing in a structured and supportive environment.

Young Guns is also a strong starting point for kart racers looking to transition into dirt car racing. The division allows drivers with karting experience to apply their skills to full size race cars while learning the fundamentals of dirt track competition at the speedway level.

Cars & Rules

Young Guns uses a defined set of entry level race cars designed to keep competition affordable, safe, and consistent. All cars must meet the official division rules and pass inspection before competing.

Rather than listing technical details here, families are encouraged to review our Rules of Procedure and our Young Guns Rules, which outlines:

  • Eligible cars
  • Vehicle requirements
  • Safety standards
  • Technical specifications

This ensures all teams are working from the same information. These rules are available to review on our rules page.

Safety Comes First

Drivers are required to wear approved safety equipment, including a helmet, fire suit, and other protective gear as outlined in the rules. Many families start with entry level or used equipment that meets safety standards.

Safety requirements are strictly enforced to maintain a controlled and responsible racing environment.

All safety procedures and rules are also available for review on our rules page.

Options for Drivers Under 13

Younger racing enthusiasts have great opportunities in the Western Pennsylvania region to get involved in motorsports before moving into car racing at PPMS.

For kids who enjoy speed and want to start learning racing skills, karting and youth car divisions offer fun, developmental racing experiences that build confidence and vehicle control.

Local Karting and Youth Racing Opportunities

One popular local destination for dirt kart racing is Shaffer Speedway. This 1/8-mile dirt oval in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania hosts regular kart racing events with classes for young and beginner drivers. The facility promotes a safe and family-friendly atmosphere for kids to learn competitive karting, build foundational driving skills, and enjoy the thrill of racing in a structured environment. Karting at Shaffer Speedway often includes rookie and junior classes that help young racers progress as they grow.

Another great option in the region is Blanket Hill Speedway in Kittanning, Pennsylvania. This family-oriented dirt track offers the Bandit Division, which is geared toward young drivers ages 5 to 8. Bandit cars are fun, smaller vehicles built on micro chassis that help introduce youth to basic racing fundamentals in a competitive yet supportive setting. Weekly races and youth-focused events provide a welcoming way for children to begin their journey in motorsports.

Both karting and Bandit car racing help younger drivers develop skills such as decision making, spatial awareness, focus under pressure, and respect for rules and safety. These early experiences also build community with other families and young racers, setting a strong foundation for future progression into larger cars and organized divisions like Young Guns at PPMS.

Try Racing Before You Commit

For kids and teens who want to experience racing before stepping into dirt track competition, there is an easy way to give it a try locally.

Three Rivers Karting Entertainment Park offers indoor electric kart racing in a controlled and beginner friendly environment. Drivers receive a safety briefing before racing, and multiple speed levels allow newcomers to learn at a comfortable pace.

This is a great option for families who want to introduce kids to racing, build confidence behind the wheel, and see if motorsports are the right fit before moving into organized dirt racing divisions like Young Guns.
