Anderson Wins Shootout Thriller; Season Titles Locked at Dirt’s Monster Half Mile (Full Write Up Results for 9-27-25 Sport Compact Shootut)

The calendar said late September as fall colors dotted the hills around Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway, but the grandstands felt like midsummer heat.

The stage was set for the 4th Annual SCDRA Northeast Sport Compact Shootout with the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders, and the buzz said the compacts might steal the show.

Champions were recognized at night’s end, but the spotlight stayed on the on-track fights that decided pride and payouts. Fans packed in for a program built to deliver from the first green to the final checkered.

A five-division spectacle followed. The crowd got qualifying, ten heat races, two B-mains six A-main features, and five 2025 division champions celebrated under the lights.

Chris Anderson (516) of Rockhill stole the show, charging from ninth to win the 4th Annual SCDRA Northeast Sport Compact Shootout for the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinders. Matt Kiesel (3K) of Pittsburgh claimed the Non-Qualifier feature, while Cameron Hollister (44) of McDonald locked down the Crawford Auto Repair Open Four Cylinder Track Championship.

Tommy Schirnhofer (8S) of Dormont grabbed his second win of the season in the Rohrich Automotive/Chevrolet Performance RUSH Late Models, with Brandon Burgoon (5X) of McDonald securing the division crown.

Jason Fosnaught (25) of Tarentum topped the 15-lap Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature, while AJ Poljak (36) of Baldwin sealed the championship in dominant fashion with 10 feature wins.

Garrett O’Patchen (25) of Scott Township took home the Auto House Hobby Stock feature, with Leroy Brown (40B) of Aliquippa clinching the division title.

Evan Strouse (54) of Lower Burrell scored another win in the Kehm Oil Young Guns, while rookie Kane Zupancic (11) of Collier wrapped up the Young Guns Championship.

39 Crawford Auto Repair SCDRA Northeast Open Four Cylinders rolled into Dirt’s Monster Half Mile Saturday night for the 4th Annual Sport Compact Shootout. Jacob Wheeler (44) of Dorset, Ohio, set fast time at 22.814, the only driver to crack the 22-second bracket, with last year’s winner Nick Timberlake (13T) second quick at 23.219 and Robbie Carroll (69C) third at 23.355.

Qualifying locked in spots for four heat races, with the top four from each transferring directly into the A-Main. Everyone else was forced into two B-Mains, where the top three advanced, while the rest were left to battle it out in the six-lap Non-Qualifier.

After the heats and B-Mains, the 25-car grid was set with Josh Franz (114) of Reynoldsville on the pole, Jeff Huber (42) of Mayport alongside, Derek Iser (02) of Fort Ashby, WV in third, and Wheeler starting fourth. When the green dropped, Franz charged to the lead, briefly gave it up, then clawed it back by lap two.

Disaster struck on lap five as a bad crash in turn two brought out the red, though all drivers were okay. Once the mess was cleared, Franz led the single-file restart with Wheeler chasing in second and Huber holding third.

Franz began stretching his lead as he carved through lapped traffic, looking untouchable as the laps wound down. The race turned upside down when Franz’s car broke coming to the white flag, leaving him limping as Wheeler, Huber, and Chris Anderson (516) went three-wide in a furious fight for the lead.

Huber clipped the outside wall on the backstretch, bringing out the caution as Anderson, Wheeler, and lapped traffic reached the checkers. The field was frozen with leader-plus-one scoring, giving Anderson the dramatic win, Wheeler second, Gavin Kokolis (91) third, Jeff Erb (777J) fourth, and Franz holding on for fifth.

Heat race wins went to Wheeler, Iser, Huber, and Franz. The two B-Mains were captured by Tyler Hollister (69) and David Seibert (777).

The Non-Qualifier six-lap feature lined up with Kevin Dutton (222) of Pittsburgh on the pole, Lucas Weaver (11) of California to his outside, Matt Kiesel (3K) in third, and Chuck Dizzle (22D) of Pittsburgh completing the four-car field.

At the green, Weaver jumped to the lead with Dizzle sliding into second.

Trouble came on lap two when Weaver clipped the Jersey Barriers on the inside of the front stretch near victory lane, ending his night and bringing out the caution.

Kiesel inherited the lead and, once green returned, held it for the final four laps to score the win.

Dizzle crossed second, Dutton third, and Weaver was credited with fourth to round out the field.

The Rohrich Automotive/Chevrolet Performance RUSH Late Model 20-lap feature saw Daryl Charlier (42) of Midway on the pole with Tommy Schirnhofer (8S) to his outside, while Logen Lockhart (58) of Seneca and Kassidy Kamicker (72B) of Aliquippa filled out row two.

Schirnhofer jumped out front at the start with Charlier slotting into second and Lockhart holding third.

A lap five caution for a car in turn one brought the field back together, but Schirnhofer held strong on the outside with Charlier on his bumper and Kyle Lukon (184) moving into third.

From there the race went green to checkers, and Schirnhofer cruised to his second Late Model win of the season. Lukon crossed second, Charlier third, Brandon Burgoon (5X) finished fourth, and Lockhart rounded out the top five. Heat race wins went to Charlier and Noah Brunell (31).

Nick Kocuba (10) of Burgettstown was slated to start on the pole for the 15-lap Pittsburgh Truck Center Penn Ohio Pro Stock feature but scratched as a DNS, handing the spot to Jason Fosnaught (25) with Cody Koteles (1K) of Stockdale to his outside.

Ricky Steigerwald (00) of Moon lined up third and Mike Strouse (66) of Lower Burrell started fourth.

Fosnaught jumped out front at the green and never looked back, running all 15 laps in clean air as the feature went caution-free.

He claimed another Pro Stock win ahead of Steigerwald in second, Koteles in third, Dale Tuche (310) in fourth, and Strouse in fifth, while Kocuba earned the heat race win earlier in the night.

In the Auto House Hobby Stock 15-lap feature, Joe Brown Sr (48) of Aliquippa drew the pole with Tom Anton (64) of Jefferson Hills to his outside. Chloie Jones (76) of Wellsburg, WV started third, while Leroy Brown (40B) of Aliquippa completed row two.

When the green dropped, Garrett O’Patchen (25) charged from his P5 starting spot to grab the early lead with Jones in second and L. Brown in third. Jones kept the pressure on, showing her nose on lap eight and again on lap 10, but O’Patchen refused to give it up.

The race stayed green to checkers in record fashion as O’Patchen pulled away to score his second win of the season. Jones finished second, L. Brown took third, Anton fourth, and Marc Corio (14) rounded out the top five, with heats going to Anton and O’Patchen.

Last but not least was the eight-lap Kehm Oil Young Guns feature with Ryleigh Heasley (212) of Beaver on the pole and Evan Strouse (54) to her outside. Row two lined up with Kane Zupancic (11) in third and Nathan Olenik (99) of Crescent in fourth.

When the green dropped, Strouse powered to the front with Heasley in second and Olenik in third. Strouse never looked back, leading every lap to score another Kehm Oil Young Guns win.

Heasley finished second, Olenik took third, Zupancic came home fourth, and Braxton Jackson (54J) rounded out the top five. The heat race went to Strouse.
